Empowering Education
Through Bicycles

The Kono Bicycle Project is a registered Community Based Organisation in Sierra Leone. It runs bicycle libraries for children and young people to ride to school, college and university. We raise funds in the UK through Friends of Kono Bicycle Project to keep the bikes on the road.

Empowering girls and young women

Our Mission

To work in partnership with community leaders, youth workers, parents, children and young people, schools, colleges and universities.

To provide free access to bicycles for students through membership of bicycle libraries.

Girls and young women are positively encouraged to become a member of one of our bicycle libraries, ensuring gender equality in the distribution of bicycles.

Background to the Project

Kono District is the centre of Sierra Leone’s diamond mining industry where communities and families are often displaced by mining activity.

Relocated communities result in children and young people travelling long distances to get to school, college or university.

Travelling long distances to access educational opportunities often contributes to low attendance and high dropout rates.

We make a difference by providing free access to bicycles for children and young people to help them complete their education.
